Spotlight On DJ Dynamyte (aka Gamu) Spotlight On..
B
orn in a family of five girls and being the last born Gamu’s (known as DJDynamyte) passion for radio began in her early teenage years. Since joining zimNETradio she has become a household name with the show Ladies Nite Show. This is a show with women at heart and the aim is to bring out the silent cry from women, she has brought joy, laughter, tears and education in so many homes on Tuesday nights. When she is not wearing her DJ headphones she is a hard working career woman, who is also studying part-time.
Q: Tell us where the name Dynamyte came from or should I say why that name?
A: You know up to this very day I have no idea why I even agreed to the name but it was suggested to me by a good friend of mine, I guess he had seen something dynamic about me….
Q: How did the whole radio presenting start for you and when?
A: Hmm having grown up in a family of five girls and being the last born all you do is the girlie stuff which included listening to the radio. I feel in love with the radio in my early teenage years and I think I have to blame it on Zimbabwe’s PowerFM (3FM or Radio 3) because all I did was sit there and listen to the beautiful, sweet voices of the female DJ and gosh the male DJ who could ever forget those sexy voices of the likes of Chaka Dee, DJMunya. To me it was just a dream that I never imagined would become a reality. It was only in 2006 that the opportunity of joining zim NET radio rose and without experience I just went ahead and did what I could do on air. And I love people and music so it just feels right….
Q: What makes you unique from all other radio presenters?
A: Personally I would say when it comes to radio, I love what I do and I am very passionate about it. It is not as easy as it may sound because there is more to do behind the scenes, so for myself I would say it’s the joy, laughter, love, passion and sexiness that I bring to the whole package of radio presenting that makes me unique. I am also a very tolerant person and when you are presenting on radio you encounter so many different things and people and I just laugh it off….
Q: What would you say is the best thing about being a DJ?
A: For myself, the fact that I am talking alone like a crazy woman at the same time entertaining someone out there with a hobby I enjoy doing this and that has got to be the best thing.
Q: Having listened to your shows you seem to be a lady with women at heart, talk to me?
A: Yes, I present the ladies Nite Show a show that looks at different issues that affect women in the societies that we living in, so basically we touch on anything to do with women, anything you may think is women related we are on it. By the way being a DJ you got to be flexible in hosting any show and I believe I can hold it down all the way….and lets not forget I AM A WOMAN so these issues also affect me and I am learning at the same time as I do my shows….
Q: Talking about the ladies night show, I must say you are one in a million, how do you handle some of the crazy callers?
A: LOL, I have learnt that being a DJ you have to be patient and treat everyone equally, my show is mental, it’s crazy, inoda akashinga but at the same time you got to love it….
Q: You were awarded the ZAA Female radio presenter of the year 2011, how did that happen?
A: Wow, how it happened, I guess I was the most voted nominee…
Q: Ok, I guess the question was supposed to be, how does it feel to be an award winning presenter?
A: That’s better (lol)….Well to be honest I never imagined myself to be awarded for entertaining people. It felt and still feels great to know that what I and other presenters out there do is appreciated and does not go in vain. I feel blessed and honored that the few hours a day I spend on air have touched enuf of my fellow people for them to vote for me to receive this award….
Q: What has been the highlight of your “hobby” so far?
A: Meeting the listeners who bring a smile to my face when I least expect it. When I co-hosted shows with Kazz of BkayNKazz, Tim2soxx (a show to remember), Michael Sameke and having the girls I work with on the show makes everything worth it.
Q:We all have our good and not so good days; how do you manage to remain upbeat every time you’re on air?
A: Everytime I am on radio I am on cloud nine, there is just something magical about being behind that computer and MIC. I try never to take my downside of the day on radio because I am there to entertain, educate, inspire people so if I take that with me on air I have let down the listeners.
Q:What’s your source of inspiration?
A: Love – where I come from (my family) we have a gift of love and it is our duty to spread it as much as we can. I am blessed to have a loving family.
Q: What’s the single most memorable show you’ve done to date
A: Loads of them but looking back from today, it would have to be the day I went live for the 1st time, I did not realise I was live, thought I was just training till I was informed that I had been live for a good 1 hour, I remember my heart beating so fast but ended up being on air for a good 5hrs.
Q: Are you ever going to replace your intro song “Shaina”
A: LOL, I doubt it. Ok here is the thing, the words in that song are uplifting, inspiring and when I start my show I am giving a message to everyone listening that be inspired, shaina nezvauri, do not look down upon yourself, “urimwenje usazodzima”
Q: What are your future plans where radio entertainment in concerned
A: At the moment it fits perfectly well with my lifestyle, I fear that when the time comes that things change how will I cope without radio, it’s part of me and it will break my heart to let it go.
Q: Besides being DJDynamyte is there anything else that you do?
A: I work fulltime and I am studying part-time as well, so my life is hectic but I live with the grace of God.
Q: Anything interesting about you that we do not know?
A: The lady you hear behind the MIC is not the lady I am when off air. Gamu is reserved and quiet. Strange but I have two opposite characters.
Q: Marital Status & Children?
A: Single and no children
Q: And in closing, any dynamyte words?
A: I am not perfect, I have my own downfalls and can never please everyone, radio is my passion and I love it, I have been presenting for over 5yrs it has become part of me. I will continue doing what I know best in the entertainment field. It is a gift that God gave me and I will use it where possible. zimNETradio has opened so many doors in my life, working with all staff members is an honour, special mention to Ronald Murape (CEO) he kept pushing for perfection and I delivered. To my family who have been there with me from the start up to this day, words can never express how grateful I am. Kuvatsigiri vangu, Mwari vakukomborerei zvidhafu dhafu (lol)…..
